.series intro

Series: Everyday Life Scenes

Major Influences: The absurdity of everyday life. Routine occasions, ordinary days and common tasks of human life.

Sources of Imagery: Live models. Photography on location, digital manipulation of images incorporated into the canvas, sketches, in some cases collage materials from literature collected by the artist.

Current working studio at the Helmsley-Spears Complex

The remarks received most about Lemya el Sophia's work are on the texture: "In my paintings, texture is actually utilized- not simulated- to build up relief from the surface of the canvas. A work of art is a triple experience: visual, emotional, and intellectual. Everything is understood in its essence, and the essential quality is expressed by the most effective degree of emphasis; in the case of my work, utilizing textural contours. There is nothing more personal than touching something with your hands, manipulating it, making it exact. It is my intimate connection with each of these paintings."

Excerpt from a recent critique (Spencer Reegan) of Lemya el Sophia's paintings: "...the work's sublimity lies precisely in the fact that although the dense and massive appearance makes it have a sculpture-like presence, it exudes a profound sense of buoyancy and movement..."
